Direct Black G is used for dyeing cotton and viscose fibers, and can also be used for dyeing hemp, silk and nylon.

Direct Black G is highly soluble in water, and its aqueous solution appears green-black, slightly turning red when 10% sulfuric acid is added, and blue-green when concentrated alkali is added.

Direct Black G is slightly soluble in ethanol and acetone. In concentrated sulfuric acid, it appears green-black, and upon dilution, it produces a red-black precipitate. In concentrated nitric acid, it appears dark brown.

When used for staining,Direct Black G produces a slightly green color when exposed to copper ions and slight changes in color when exposed to iron ions
